Prerequisites:
Good basic knowledge of English. Teaching is through the medium of
English
Objectives of the course:
The
intention of the course is to
a)
activate and extend the special vocabulary of mathematics, physics
and the exact sciences as well as to perfect the following skills:
Comprehension
(both listening and reading) using materials from the
subject area (written texts and audio / video)
Reading
of mathematical expressions and formulas as well as
presentation of mathematical and physical texts
Explanation
in English of the steps taken in solving mathematical
problems
Summarizing
of articles and preparation of short reports in the subject
area
b)
communicate knowledge in the following areas:
Basic
concepts of mathematics, physics and the exact sciences
Syntactical
and stylistic aspects of writing in mathematics, physics
and the exact sciences
Training,
qualification and career patterns of mathematicians and
physicists in the English-speaking world
Cultural
studies, including aspects of the history of mathematics,
physics and of the respective professions in the Anglo-Saxon cultural
context
Duration:
The
course is the second part in a two-semester cycle. It follows
the course English of
Physics, which takes place in the
winter semester, and incorporates the
former course English of
Mathematics.
