Mr. Ginnousuke O'Hara designed and built the sundial and presented it to the Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii on behalf of the Citizen Watch Company of Tokyo. By the time he died in 1983, Mr. O'Hara had realized his dream--"to encircle the globe with his sundials--to obtain immortality by having the sun shine on at least one of the dials every minute of the day". Mr. O'Hara's hometown of Sagamihara is the site of the Japan Space Agency Institute for Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS).
